Supreme Court widens Trump’s immigration authority
The Supreme Court handed the Trump administration two major immigration wins, clearing the way to end deportation protections for Haitian and Syrian TPS holders and to tighten access for many asylum seekers at the southern border.
For immigration hardliners, the decisions reinforce presidential control over who can enter or remain in the country. For demographers and economists, they add to a separate concern: the U.S. is reducing immigration at the same time birthrates remain too low to sustain long-term population growth.
Census data cited in the report shows a sharp drop in expected foreign migration, from about 2.7 million in 2024 to as low as 300,000 this year. That shift could mean fewer young workers, taxpayers, students and families in communities already facing aging populations.
Trump moves to put Lance Schroyer in charge of ICE
President Trump said he is nominating Lance Schroyer, a former Oklahoma state trooper and Marine with 29 years of law enforcement experience, to lead ICE. If confirmed, Schroyer would take over an agency central to Trump’s deportation campaign, at a time when ICE is under pressure to expand arrests and detention capacity.
According to NBC News, two sources noted that Schroyer has local law enforcement experience, but no specific ICE background. Acting Director David Venturella is expected to remain in place while the Senate considers the nomination.
The announcement follows recent Supreme Court wins for the administration and comes as the DHS watchdog reviews ICE detention deaths and use-of-force practices. Schroyer’s nomination points to continued emphasis on enforcement, detention and removal operations.
DHS says AI visa tools could launch within 30 days
The Trump administration is preparing an AI-driven update to visa and immigration processing, with the first platform expected to launch within 30 days. DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin told lawmakers the initial rollout would focus on DACA application backlogs. Planned changes also include digital forms that flag incomplete or incorrect submissions before an applicant can file.
DHS is also working with Commerce on a mobile app for immigration services. The stated goal is faster processing, fewer errors and better identity checks. Mullin said H-2A agricultural visas are now moving in about 15 days, and DHS is looking at labor needs in industries such as dairy. Still, automation will not change the underlying eligibility rules. Faster systems may help, but strong filings and clean documentation will remain essential.
